Highlights from the Crochet Meetup

I recently hosted a crochet gathering where I expected about ten participants but was greeted by a lively group of 18! This unexpected turnout made the day even more exciting. It was wonderful to meet so many amazing women ready to dive into granny square-making.

An Outdoor Crochet Session in Paradise

The meetup took place on the grounds of a beautiful Baptist missionary site known for its breathtaking scenery. Enclosed by over 1,000 species of trees, these 200 acres of lush greenery set the tone for a truly memorable day. Imagine crocheting with a serene mountainous backdrop—talk about inspiration!

Language Barriers and Laughing Through Crochet

Crocheting with a diverse group certainly brought its challenges. While not everyone spoke English, we managed to communicate through gestures, laughter, and a shared love for crochet. My less-than-perfect Swahili definitely entertained the group, and we all had a good giggle as we worked through the craft together.

Preparing Yarn Parcels and Choosing Colors

Ahead of the meetup, I prepared eight yarn parcels, thinking the group would be smaller. As we all know, yarn lovers can never have enough options! I brought a colorful selection from my stash, but by the time everyone got into their groove, the group ended up sharing and swapping colors.

Showcasing Granny Square Progress

The day's goal was to teach everyone how to crochet a four-round granny square, leaving a long tail for joining. While some creations turned out perfectly, others required a redo or two. It's all part of the learning process!

A Stack of 62 Random Granny Squares

By the end of the meetup, the group had created 62 granny squares in every imaginable color combination. These mismatched bundles of creativity now sit in a pile, waiting for their purpose.

So what am I going to do with them? Maybe join them with white yarn to make a cohesive design, turn them into quirky pillows, or even create cozy dog beds. If you've got ideas for mismatched granny squares, let me know in the comments!

Creative Crochet Projects

The day didn’t end with granny squares! One participant crafted 24 gorgeous Christmas ornaments using scrap yarn. Meanwhile, leftover yarn was turned into playful fidget toys for kids—perfect for keeping little hands busy.

Functional Crochet: Tissue Holder Houses

Inspired by my kids' school theme of "homes," I created tissue paper holders resembling traditional Kenyan houses. These crochet holders have a raised roof design and are perfect for keeping tissues handy in the classroom.
