I’m so excited to share my latest festive crochet project with you—an Adorable Christmas Stocking Advent Calendar! This project is a great way to bring some handmade charm into your home during the holiday season. Not only does it set the stage for fun and anticipation as you count down the days to Christmas, but it’s also perfect for stash-busting leftover yarn.
These mini crochet stockings are quick to make, easy for beginners, and can be personalized to fit your holiday decor. Plus, the written pattern is available right here.
Here's the tutorial video to crochet along with:
Let’s break down the materials you’ll need, along with all the steps you’ll follow while making your Christmas Stocking Advent Calendar.
You’ll need three different colors of yarn for your stockings. I used Savor from Ice Yarns, a worsted weight (4) acrylic yarn, but feel free to use what matches your stash or preference.
Here’s a quick tip—if you’re in Australia, you’ll want to grab a 10-ply yarn for this project. The mini stocking sizes allow you to mix colors however you'd like, whether traditional red and green, soft pastels, or even sparkly holiday-themed hues!
For this project, I used a 5.5 mm crochet hook. This is the perfect size for worsted-weight yarn, ensuring the stitches look neat while still chaining up quickly—perfect for getting 24 stockings ready before December hits!
Here’s a quick checklist of the additional tools you’ll want:
If you'd like to see more crochet projects or beginner-friendly patterns, check out this guide, where we dive into basic patterns.
You’ll start by making 24 mini stockings for the advent calendar. Here's a breakdown of how to construct each stocking.
Step 1: Start with a Slip Knot
Make a slip knot with the first color of yarn and chain three. We’ll be forming the base of the stocking by creating a small ring.
Step 2: Form a Ring
Slip stitch into the first chain to form a small ring, and chain three. This will count as the first double crochet. From here, we’re going to add more double crochets into the ring.
Step 3: Crocheting Around the Ring
Now, crochet two double crochets into the center of the ring, followed by a chain of two. Repeat this process 6 times, ending with 6 pairs of double crochets separated by chain-two spaces. Join the round with a slip stitch into the top of the initial chain you made.
Step 4: Shape the Base
This round lays the foundation for the stocking shape, with the yarn worked into a neat circle. As you add more rounds, the shape will begin to look more recognizable as the upper part of the stocking.
Don’t forget to check out the written pattern for more details on each step.
Step 1: Join a New Color
Now we’ll switch to another color by making a slip stitch into the chain-two space of the previous round. From here, crochet treble and double crochets to shape both sides of the stocking.
Step 2: Mark the Important Spots
The treble crochets create the top of the stocking, which is slightly wider. Use stitch markers to highlight these spots, as this is where the stocking shape will start to form more noticeably.
Once your stocking body is done, we’ll add the hanging loop for easy display.
Now comes the fun part—bringing it all together!
Repeat the steps above until you’ve completed 24 stockings. This can be a great time to experiment with color combinations. Alternate between red, green, white, or other colors to create fun contrasts.
For a more streamlined look, you could go for all matching stockings. But let’s be honest—crochet is all about personality, so go wild!
Step 1: Start with a Slip Knot and Chains
For each stocking, make a slip knot and chain 15. You’ll form a small ring at the top by slip stitching back into the first stitch. This creates a loop for hanging your entire advent calendar.
Step 2: Join the Stockings
Once your chain is ready, start attaching the finished stockings. Insert your hook into the chain space at the top of each stocking and single crochet to join. Continue chaining and attaching each stocking the same way until you’ve completed the full lineup.
At this point, you can adjust the spacing between stockings. If you find you need more room between each piece, increase the number of chains between attachments.

What’s an advent calendar without filling the stockings?
Chocolates and Sweets: Stick a small treat or candy bar into each mini stocking to sweeten the holiday countdown.
Personalized Messages: You could include notes with daily holiday activities for the family, like "watch a Christmas movie" or "bake cookies."
Numbered Tags: For a classic look, print out small numbered tags to insert into each stocking, helping with the daily countdown.

Once all your stockings are assembled and connected, take a moment to sew in all the yarn ends and check each stocking for any loose threads. Giving everything a finishing touch is the key to making your advent calendar last for years to come.
Once finished, it’s time to hang it up and enjoy as a beautiful handmade countdown to Christmas.
I hope you enjoyed making this as much as I did! Don't forget to check out the Christmas Stocking Advent Calendar for a written version and extra tips, or browse more holiday-themed projects in our collection.
I'll be waiting to see your version—happy crocheting and stay hooked!

Yes, since they're made from acrylic yarn, they can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and laid flat to dry. This ensures they maintain their shape and color.
The pattern recommends a 5.5 mm crochet hook, which works well with worsted-weight yarn. This size helps create neat and quick stitches, perfect for small projects like these stockings.
You'll need to crochet 24 mini stockings, one for each day leading up to Christmas.
Yes, you can adjust the pattern by increasing the number of chains and stitches in each round to create larger stockings. Just remember to increase consistently across all rounds.
Fill them with small treats, personalized messages, or even small gifts. Numbered tags can also be added for a classic advent countdown.

Love the Secret Yarnery patterns and tutorials - thank you so much for your time, efforts, and for sharing your talent with the rest of us in the world!
The best pattern & tutorial I have ever come across. Loved how you used the needle to clearly point out where the stitch was to go. Have made 3 hats already. Many more on my to do list. Thanks so much
The yarn world is vast & has several yarn naming & grading systems. This chart really helps to get the right weight of yarn, size of needle, gauge & yardage/meterage when using patterns or yarns from other countries. And it covers both knit & crochet. Thank you for putting together this very useful tool, Secret Yarnery.
I love this pattern. Very easy to follow and fun to make.
Glad I found this pattern. I love it.
It was very easy to do. I have already made 4
Great pattern and PERFECT tutorial!
The directions are so clear and easy to follow. I am a beginner and this pattern is really making me feel confident. My first stocking was less than an hour to make (which I went really slow-so it was a surprise it worked up so quickly). I am making them for a group of coworkers and I think they are going to love them! Thank you.
Just finishing up the collar trim and I will be finished. It's only been 2 or 3 days working on it off and on. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a pattern that has no complicated stitch patterns. This one fits the bill but is still a nice looking project. Can't wait for cooler weather so I can wear it. Might be a while here in Louisiana.
I love this hat; it is so easy to make and works up really fast. I used a size 7:00 mm hook. My only concern was I wasn’t sure how many chains to make for the infant and child sizes.
I love this pattern. It follows along with the video perfectly! I have started 2 of them! I couldn't wait to use the yarn I had!
