Christmas is just around the corner, and you're probably looking for cute, quick crochet projects to spread some handmade holiday cheer. Well, you're in luck! In this post, we'll be making a crochet gift card holder stocking — a fun, stash-busting project that's perfect for last-minute gifts. These little stockings are great for holding gift cards, small trinkets, and even scratch tickets or money.
The best part? They come together super fast, using as little as 16 grams of 4-weight yarn each. Whether you're familiar with crochet or new to it, this is a project you can enjoy in an afternoon.
We also have a video tutorial for this project, which you’ll find below:
Before we get started, make sure you have the right tools handy:
If you're unsure where to find these basics, you can check out the selection of Christmas crochet patterns and yarn options over at Secret Yarnery.
To start, you’ll make a simple slip knot and pop it into your hook. If you're up for it, you can also use a magic ring for an even more crochet-savvy start.
Next, we need to chain three and slip stitch into the very first chain to form your ring. Hold that little loop open under your hook and keep working your way into the stocking shape.
All of this might sound tricky, but remember: these crochet stockings are quick to learn and even quicker to make! If you feel stuck, check out some of my other beginner crochet patterns for additional help.
Let’s jump into making our stocking base! Start by chaining three — this will count as your first double crochet. We will then double crochet into the ring and chain two after each pair of double crochets.
For the first round, you'll end up with six pairs of double crochets and chain two between each pair. Since you will be working into small sections, you might want to gently slide your stitches a bit to keep them flat and evenly spaced.
In Round 2, we begin creating the shape using our second color of yarn. To switch colors, join the new yarn in any of the spaces between your double crochet pairs. Once joined, we follow a simple process: three double crochets into each space and chain two at the corners.
After this round, the stocking shape will really start to come together, creating those classic sharp edges that everyone loves in a Christmas stocking. If you're all about holiday spirit, be sure to explore more festive Christmas crochet patterns over on my blog.
Here’s where the magic happens! In Round 3, we introduce treble crochets. These longer stitches help elongate one side of your stocking, giving it that sweet little stocking boot shape.
You’ll mix in double crochets for the other sides, but in the corners, you'll want those treble crochets to do the heavy lifting. Don’t worry about things looking perfect — crochet has room for personality! And if you're struggling to see your treble crochets stand out, consider marking spots with a stitch marker.
By the time you get to Round 4, you have a good-looking stocking base. But now, we’ll focus on solidifying the top half of the stocking. For this, we start by marking the area where treble crochets formed the top and work our way around it.
You’ll continue crocheting double crochets around the bends of the stocking. Take extra care to slide your stitches in corners to keep everything snug and flat. After completing the final section, you should have a nice pocket-like shape, ready to be joined into a functional, cute stocking!
Now for the fun part — putting it all together! To finish the stocking, chain 15 to create the hanging loop. Then fold the bottom half of the stocking under the top half and begin sewing both sides together using single crochet stitches.
You’ll line up the edges, making sure to slip stitch twice into the first pair of double crochets to get things nice and snug. Continue down the sides doing one single crochet into each pair of stitches along the edges.
One of the trickiest parts of any stocking is the toe shaping. But here’s a trick: instead of continuously crocheting around the toes, break up your toe stitches with small chain one’s to help ease the tension, especially at the corners. This helps keep the stocking stretchy and soft, ensuring it’s as functional as it is cute.
Once your stitches are all in place, sew in the excess yarn tails using a sharp-tip needle. If you’ve followed closely, you should have a smooth and neat finish, especially around the toe. Want more tips on Christmas crafts? You’ll love these gift ideas.
As with any crochet project, your final task is to weave in the ends. To get a professional, finished look, make sure your yarn tails are sewn neatly into the inside of the stocking, never leaving any stray yarn visible.
If you're using multiple colors, take extra care to hide the yarn tails between the layers of stitches. This isn’t just important for aesthetics — it’ll make your crochet gift card holder more durable.
What can you stash inside these stockings? Gift cards are the obvious choice, but these darling crochet stockings also fit small items like chocolates, trinkets, or even a sweet holiday note.
Feeling creative? Personalize each stocking for a friend or family member with their favorite colors or even some simple embellishments like tassels, buttons, or pom-poms. Check out the cute patterns available among our Christmas designs for more ideas!
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! However, no project comes without the occasional hiccup.

For this crochet gift card holder stocking, a 4-weight worsted acrylic yarn is ideal. It balances structure and softness, and it's often washable, which is great for gifts.
While a 5.5 mm crochet hook is recommended for this project, you can use a different size if you prefer a tighter or looser weave. Adjustments may affect the overall size and structure of the stocking.
You can personalize them by using the recipient's favorite colors or adding embellishments like tassels, buttons, or fabric paint for initials.
Yes, this project is beginner-friendly. With basic crochet skills like slip stitches, double crochets, and simple assembly, you should be able to complete it with ease.
If your stocking feels too floppy, consider using a smaller hook for tighter stitches or a stiffer yarn. Adding a lining can also help increase strength and shape.
Since they’re made from acrylic yarn, they are generally machine-washable. However, always check the yarn label for specific care instructions and consider washing them gently to preserve their shape.
These stockings are versatile! Besides gift cards, they are perfect for small items like sweets, jewelry, small toys, or handwritten notes.

Love the Secret Yarnery patterns and tutorials - thank you so much for your time, efforts, and for sharing your talent with the rest of us in the world!
The best pattern & tutorial I have ever come across. Loved how you used the needle to clearly point out where the stitch was to go. Have made 3 hats already. Many more on my to do list. Thanks so much
The yarn world is vast & has several yarn naming & grading systems. This chart really helps to get the right weight of yarn, size of needle, gauge & yardage/meterage when using patterns or yarns from other countries. And it covers both knit & crochet. Thank you for putting together this very useful tool, Secret Yarnery.
I love this pattern. Very easy to follow and fun to make.
Glad I found this pattern. I love it.
It was very easy to do. I have already made 4
Great pattern and PERFECT tutorial!
The directions are so clear and easy to follow. I am a beginner and this pattern is really making me feel confident. My first stocking was less than an hour to make (which I went really slow-so it was a surprise it worked up so quickly). I am making them for a group of coworkers and I think they are going to love them! Thank you.
Just finishing up the collar trim and I will be finished. It's only been 2 or 3 days working on it off and on. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a pattern that has no complicated stitch patterns. This one fits the bill but is still a nice looking project. Can't wait for cooler weather so I can wear it. Might be a while here in Louisiana.
I love this hat; it is so easy to make and works up really fast. I used a size 7:00 mm hook. My only concern was I wasn’t sure how many chains to make for the infant and child sizes.
I love this pattern. It follows along with the video perfectly! I have started 2 of them! I couldn't wait to use the yarn I had!
Iii love this hat and want to make them for myc3-5 year old students. Could you i i love this hat. I would like to make them forcmyc3-5 yearvold students. Could you please help me with the sizing needed for t toddlers? Basically hook size, number if chains and rows. I appreciate any help you can provide.Thank you very much
