Today, I'm excited to show you how to crochet a beautiful granny square Christmas stocking. This stocking works up quickly, making it the perfect project for the busy holiday season. Whether you want a classic two-color look, a fun scrappy stocking using leftover yarn, or even a solid-colored stocking, there’s so much room to get creative with this pattern.
Before we jump in, I want to remind you that the written pattern is available here on my website. All my patterns are written in plain language, so even if you're new to following written crochet patterns, you'll feel right at home!
Here's a video tutorial to help you follow along:
To make this gorgeous granny square stocking, you'll need the following materials:
It’s really that simple. Let’s get started!
Choosing the right colors for your stocking is part of the magic! You can go for:
Whichever option you decide, pick colors that make you feel joyful. After all, this is a stocking, and it’s all about spreading holiday cheer!
Let’s start by making a slip knot with your center color yarn. This is the color that will go in the middle of your square.
Now, inside the ring:
At this point, you’re going to repeat this sequence of two double crochets and chaining two until you have six groups of double crochets forming the basic structure of your granny square. The ch-2 spaces create room for your corners, and it’s key to ensure those stay defined as we move forward.
Once you’ve completed the round, join with a chain-one single crochet right at the top. Easy, right?
Now, let’s start expanding!
Repeat this for all the corners. When you get back to where you began, you can either change colors or keep going with the same color if you aren’t switching. If you decide to change colors, secure your yarn and cut it, leaving a long enough tail to sew in later.
Want to switch colors? Here’s how:
This is a small change that adds a lot of visual contrast to your stocking. If you need more ideas for color changes, check out the written patterns on the Secret Yarnery which provide some creative suggestions.
We’re building our granny square, so be sure to use stitch markers to keep track of those corners. Although it might feel tempting to rush, ensuring you’ve marked your corners helps prevent mistakes that may cost you time down the road.
For this round, follow the same process: three double crochets in each space along the sides, and for the corners, remember to chain two between your sets of three double crochets.
Now, keep repeating these granny square rounds. It’s a rhythmic and relaxing pattern to follow. Depending on personal preference, you can make your stocking more oversized or keep it smaller and compact – you control the size as you add rounds.
If you’re ever unsure about stitch placement or feel like your square is getting off track, don’t panic! Just read your stitches back carefully, and even in the case of a minor mishap, it’s not always necessary to frog your work (that’s crochet lingo for ripping it out). You can often correct small issues on the next round.
When your granny square reaches your desired size, it’s time to transform it into a stocking shape.
Step 1: Fold your square in half, bringing the opposite corners together.
You’ll see the stocking shape automatically appear! Isn’t that fun? The squares make the body of the stocking, while the joined seams create the perfect foot structure.
Don’t forget that you can grab more granny square projects from the Granny Square Christmas Stocking collection for more creative ideas.
Let’s crochet the sides together neatly. You’ll be using slip stitches here:
Want your stocking to hang on the fireplace? Here’s a little trick to create a loop:
Pro tip: Make sure the loop is strong enough to bear weight if your stocking will be filled with treats or gifts.
If you are worried about any wobbly stitches, here’s a tip: they add character! Crochet stockings should look warm and cozy. If you’re serious about correcting them, though, remember that stitch markers and counting will help you re-do any bends or corners that feel too loose.
If you’d like your stocking to be a little taller, just add more rounds. Each round will naturally add height, helping you create a longer, more traditional style stocking for those big gift surprises on Christmas morning.

When you’re ready to finish, whip stitch or slip stitch to close up the toe of the stocking. Secure all loose ends with a yarn needle neatly through the stitches. Ensure everything is snug and sturdy enough to hold the stocking shape over time.
There you have it – your stocking is done and ready!

A granny square stocking is a Christmas stocking made using the classic crochet technique known as the 'granny square.' It's a versatile and decorative piece that can be customized with various colors and patterns.
To crochet this granny square stocking, you will need:
Yes, this pattern is designed to be beginner-friendly with clear instructions. It includes written guidance and a video tutorial to help newcomers feel comfortable with the crocheting process.
You can choose from three options:
To make your stocking larger, continue adding rounds to your granny square until it reaches the desired size. This allows you to control the overall size and shape of your stocking.
If you wish to switch colors, do so at the end of a round by securing your current yarn and introducing the new color at any corner. This method adds visual contrast and interest to the stocking.
Ensure you're maintaining the correct stitch count, especially in corners. Use stitch markers to avoid losing your place. If the stocking seems wobbly, consider blocking it once completed to straighten out any unevenness.
Create a hanging loop by chaining 15 or more (as per desired length) and attach it securely to the top corner. This loop should be strong enough to support the filled stocking's weight.
Small mistakes can often be corrected in the next round without needing to unravel your work. If necessary, gently read through your stitches to detect errors.

Great pattern, easy to make and goes quickly
The of the easiest way to make a beautiful baby blanket! So fun to make.
This works up so beautifully!! The pattern is easy to read; the placemat is gorgeous, and the YouTube video is great. Thank you!!
The scarf looks lovely but I cannot give a review as i have not made it yet and I cannot comment whether the pattern is easy to read pattern.
I love the pattern I haven’t started it yet I’m excited about getting started on it
I love all secret tragedies patterns. Can't wait to start one. Thank you Christa.
Connie.
I love how this spiral pattern worked up. Ready to just keep going and only watching my stitch marker move up with me. I am going to try this pattern with different yarns for light to heavy hats.
Easy pattern to follow and understand. Great scarf for spring, Summer and Fall. If you use cotton yarn, you can wear it with everything everyday! Thanks Secret Yarnery! Eileen
In fact very easy to do
I bit the bullet (a quilter of 20 years), admitted that crochet also takes experience to succeed. So, I tried "The Secret Yarnery" pattern for Granny Square beginners. It was stress free, fun and I learned a lot about tension. And I now have a beautiful baby afghan for my new granddaughter. Thank you to the Secret Yarnery!
Everything I need in one place to be creative and I can photocopy extras of the pages I use most to customise my planning. I use it as my main diary, even for work and upcoming events. It inspires me to focus on my creative pursuits too. Love it!
Love this item going to put little gifts in it on the tree ,just tying in tails.
I am really impressed with the quality of this written pattern as well as the video tutorial. Both are clear and detailed. I am not done with my striped cardigan yet, but it's coming together nicely (though I'm not so sure about my choice to use up yarn I already have with individual stripes!)... so many tails to sew in!! My advice would be to buy self-striping yarn like she does in the video.
Easy to follow pattern! Super base for the rectangle or other larger projects.
