How to do a double crochet - Secret Yarnery

How to do a double crochet

Hi there! My name is Christa, and I'm a crochet expert and instructor. I'm so excited to teach you how to do a double crochet stitch. This is a basic stitch that's used in many different crochet projects.

It's a little taller than a single crochet stitch, so it creates a more textured fabric. Double crochet stitches are also easier to learn than some other crochet stitches, making them a great stitch for beginners.

Materials

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Tapestry needle

Step-by-Step Guide to the Double Crochet Stitch

  1. Foundation Chain: Begin by creating a foundation chain with the desired number of stitches for your project. Remember to chain a few extra stitches to account for the height of the first row.

  2. Yarn Over: Yarn over by bringing the yarn from the back of the hook to the front.

  3. Insert Hook: Insert your hook into the designated stitch or space where you want to place the double crochet.

  4. Yarn Over and Pull Through: Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the stitch, creating three loops on your hook.

  5. Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops: Yarn over once more and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook, leaving two loops remaining.

  6. Yarn Over and Pull Through Remaining Loops: Finally, yarn over one last time and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook. This completes one double crochet stitch.

  7. Repeat: Continue working double crochet stitches across the row or as indicated in your pattern.

      Tips

      • Make sure to pull up a loop with your yarn over before you pull through the first 2 loops on your hook. This will help to create a taller stitch.
      • If you are having trouble keeping track of your stitches, you can use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each row.
      • If your stitches are too tight, try using a larger crochet hook. If your stitches are too loose, try using a smaller crochet hook.

        Crochet Hook Sizes

The size of your crochet hook will affect the size of your stitches. A larger crochet hook will create larger stitches, while a smaller crochet hook will create smaller stitches. The recommended crochet hook size for double crochet stitches is typically H/8 (5.0 mm). However, you may need to adjust the size of your crochet hook depending on the yarn you are using.
