How to start crochet - Secret Yarnery

How to start crochet

Hi there, I'm Christa, and I'm a crocheter. I love the feeling of creating something with my own hands, and I'm excited to share my love of crochet with you. In this blog post, I'll show you how to get started with crochet. I'll cover everything from choosing the right supplies to learning the basic stitches. So whether you're a complete beginner or you're just looking for a refresher, read on!

What You'll Need

To get started with crochet, you'll need a few basic supplies:

  • Yarn: There are many different types of yarn available, so you'll want to choose one that's right for your project. For beginners, I recommend a worsted-weight yarn.
  • Crochet hook: The size of your crochet hook will depend on the weight of the yarn you're using. The yarn label will usually have a recommended hook size.
  • Stitch markers: Stitch markers are small, colorful pieces of plastic or metal that you can use to mark your place in a project.
  • Tapestry needle: A tapestry needle is used to weave in ends.

Learning the Basic Stitches

Once you have your supplies, you're ready to learn the basic stitches. There are only a few basic stitches that you need to know to get started, and once you learn them, you can combine them to create all sorts of projects.

The most basic stitch is the single crochet (sc). To make a single crochet, you'll insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook. Repeat until you have the desired number of stitches.

Once you've learned the single crochet, you can learn the double crochet (dc) and the half double crochet (hdc). These stitches are more complicated than the single crochet, but they're not too difficult to learn.

Practice Makes Perfect

The best way to learn crochet is to practice. Once you've learned the basic stitches, start practicing by making a simple scarf or hat. As you practice, you'll get better at making the stitches and you'll start to develop your own style.
