To create your own cozy pocket scarf, you’ll just need a few basic crochet tools:
Choosing two contrasting colors makes your scarf pop, but feel free to mix and match according to your taste.
The finished size of this scarf is approximately 59 inches long by 9 inches wide. It's long enough to drape elegantly around your neck while also offering two cozy pockets at both ends for comfort and practicality.
This scarf is designed to be beginner-friendly, with basic stitches and easy-to-follow instructions. Whether you’re commuting, walking your dog, or just hanging out at a café, it’s perfect for keeping your hands warm and your essentials close by.
Start by pulling together your materials and set up a comfortable, well-lit workspace to crochet—a quiet spot, a comfy chair, and a calming atmosphere always help with stitching!
The first step is making a slip knot, which I’ll show you how to do in the tutorial. Leave a long enough tail of yarn—this will become useful when you're sewing ends in later.
Before you begin, have your stitch markers handy. Trust me, they will save you from counting stitches incessantly! If you don’t believe me, give them a try!
Now, on to the fun part—starting your chain!
We will be using two strands of yarn for this project, so grab those tails together, and let's start with a loose chain. Here, you'll chain 25 and place a stitch marker every 25 chains to keep track of your work. In total, we’ll create a chain of 175 stitches.
The key here is not to pull tight on your chains. Making them loose will allow the yarn to slide up your hook and keep your stitches even.
Once your chain is complete, turn your focus to identifying the back loops. These are the loops we’ll be working into for our double crochet stitches.
Each back loop gets a double crochet stitch, worked evenly from one end of the chain to the other. Be patient! This may take time if you’re a beginner, but it’ll start flowing once you get the hang of it.
After completing your first row, it's time to move on to the next round of double crochets. This time, we’ll work by inserting the hook only into the front loops.
This adds a lovely texture to your scarf and gives it that soft yet structured look. Continue stitching front-loop-only double crochets across the entire row.
By the end of this row, you’re already halfway to having a completed scarf!
Once you’ve got the hang of these front loop-only double crochets, we’ll repeat this process for 8 more rows. Altogether, you will have 10 rows of double crochet. To keep track of your rows, visual cues like the lines formed by the pattern can help you tally up your progress—it’s just counting in twos at that point!
If you'd like to customize the width of your scarf, don't hesitate! Just add or reduce rows to match your preference. This easy crochet pocket scarf allows for lots of adaptability.
Here is where the project really shines—creating those pockets.
First, fold the ends of your scarf up toward the center, about 20 stitches up from the bottom on both ends. Use stitch markers to hold these folds in place so that the two ends meet evenly.
The markings will help you ensure that everything is aligned and looking neat. Nobody wants uneven pockets, right?
Now let’s join everything together using single crochet stitches. This will keep your pockets secure without any need for extra sewing.
Single crochet through both layers (the front and the back of the scarf) at regular intervals, keeping your stitches small and even. Work your way across the side edges of the scarf to complete the pockets’ attachment.
Neat and even stitches will give your scarf a professionally finished look. Take your time here to get it just right.
One last step to ensure those pockets are sturdy: Reinforce the bottom using tight single crochets across the pocket’s base. This will prevent the bottom from stretching out when you’re tucking your hands or phone in there later on.
Use a chain-one technique between single crochets to maintain structure, and make sure to only go into the smaller stitches—this extra attention to detail prevents unsightly gaps in your pocket structure!
Just like you did for the other parts, line up the sides, sandwich them together equally, and work your single crochets along the edges to join the front and back layers seamlessly.
This ensures that your pockets are durable and that the scarf will keep its shape with continued use.
Congrats! You have made it to the final step of this lovely project! Once you finish all your stitches, it’s time to secure the yarn tails.
Cut your thread, and pull the hook all the way through. To give your scarf a polished finish, use the invisible join technique. It’s quick, easy, and ensures that no one sees any awkward tails hanging from your work.
Thread your yarn needle, hide your ends neatly, and sew those tails in between stitches where they’ll blend perfectly into your finished scarf.

I am really impressed with the quality of this written pattern as well as the video tutorial. Both are clear and detailed. I am not done with my striped cardigan yet, but it's coming together nicely (though I'm not so sure about my choice to use up yarn I already have with individual stripes!)... so many tails to sew in!! My advice would be to buy self-striping yarn like she does in the video.

I think there is a mistake in the written pattern. It says to do a half double crochet twice, when it is only supposed to be once
