Hey there, it’s Christa from The Secret Yarnery! Today, I am sharing the Super Chic Orchid Storm Scarf tutorial, an elegant crochet scarf project that will elevate any yarn in your stash and add a pop of style to your wardrobe.
This pattern not only allows you to experiment with Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet, but it also gives you the chance to master adding eyelash yarn for that extra sparkle. Whether you’re crocheting this piece as a gift or for yourself, you’ll love the texture and unique flair of this scarf.
If English isn’t your first language, you can change your video settings to display subtitles in your preferred language. Plus, there’s a version for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters—find the links in the video description.
Check out the tutorial video below and follow along!
The Orchid Storm Scarf is perfect for leveling up your crochet skills. Whether you're new to textured stitches or an advanced crocheter, the two-row repeat keeps things interesting without being overly complicated. If you’ve been meaning to try working with eyelash yarn, this is an excellent project to practice that as well.
Here are a few of the standout features:
Grab your 7mm crochet hook, and let’s jump into this!
You can also download the written pattern for the Orchid Storm Scarf on my website. All my patterns are in plain English, making it feel like I’m sitting right next to you, guiding you every step of the way.
It’s always good to have all your materials prepped before you start. Here’s what you need for the Orchid Storm Scarf:
Need a simple, eye-catching border to finish off your scarf? I’ve got you covered later in the tutorial, so don’t skip ahead!

Let’s get into the first step—making a slipknot. While I demo with pink yarn in the video for better visibility, remember you’ll be using gray yarn.
Once your slipknot is on the hook, you’ll chain 48 (or any multiple of 6 if you’d like to adjust the width). For this tutorial, I demo chaining 24 stitches to make the instructions clearer.
For the foundation, after chaining 48 and adding one more chain, work into the back loops of the chain for added texture. This may be a bit tricky for beginners, so feel free to just work into the chain itself.
By the end of this row, you’ll have 48 single crochets to create a sturdy base.
Pro tip: Want to speed up the process? Go with a chainless single crochet foundation. It’s quicker and creates a stretchier base.
So, let’s begin Row 1. This row sets the pattern for your Orchid Storm Scarf, working double crochets in pairs across the row.
This forms your key stitch structure and spacing to build on.
Row 2 is where things get exciting! We start creating that lovely texture using Front Post and Back Post Double Crochets.
This stitch alternation creates a raised texture, giving the scarf its visual depth and softness.
Phew! The texture row can be a bit intense, so Row 3 gives you a breather. I call this the speed row, and it’s truly quick!
This row flies by, making it perfect for crochet sessions when you want a little less focus.
You’ll alternate between Row 2 and Row 3 going forward, creating both texture and ease in your crochet scarf project. As you go, you might wonder: should I start with a Front Post or Back Post stitch?
To figure this out, check the tops of your double crochets from the previous row:
Keep alternating rows until your scarf reaches your desired length. For my scarf, I used 400 grams of yarn, but you can adjust based on how long or short you want yours.

What’s a scarf without a good border, right? Once your main scarf is done, it’s time to move on to the border.
Do this along both sides of the scarf, making sure you join the new yarn smoothly.
Pro Tip: Eyelash yarn can be tough to spot, but the good news is no one will notice if you miss a slight detail! The texture hides any hiccups along the way.
For your second row of the border (and any additional rows) continue with granny clusters. Since we’re working in the spaces between clusters from the previous row, this part goes rather quickly.
Repeat these final rows for as long as you'd like until your border's width feels just right.
Once you’ve nailed down the border on one side, move to the other side of your scarf and repeat the exact same steps. Don’t worry about whether you work in the right or wrong direction—this pattern is totally reversible.
By now, your Orchid Storm Scarf should look stunning with its textured body and its beautiful eyelash yarn border.

The time to complete this scarf varies depending on your crochet speed and experience. On average, it could take anywhere from a few evenings to a week.
Always refer to the yarn label for specific washing instructions. Generally, it's safe to hand wash the scarf in cold water and lay it flat to dry to maintain the scarf's texture and elasticity.

Everything I need in one place to be creative and I can photocopy extras of the pages I use most to customise my planning. I use it as my main diary, even for work and upcoming events. It inspires me to focus on my creative pursuits too. Love it!
Love this item going to put little gifts in it on the tree ,just tying in tails.
I am really impressed with the quality of this written pattern as well as the video tutorial. Both are clear and detailed. I am not done with my striped cardigan yet, but it's coming together nicely (though I'm not so sure about my choice to use up yarn I already have with individual stripes!)... so many tails to sew in!! My advice would be to buy self-striping yarn like she does in the video.
Easy to follow pattern! Super base for the rectangle or other larger projects.
Keep the tutorials coming and with written and visual instructions to follow along so beginners can learn. Thank you for your help.
I think there is a mistake in the written pattern. It says to do a half double crochet twice, when it is only supposed to be once
Thank you to the Secret Yarnery for this pattern! Can't go wrong with this one, it really is easy and fast to make - I'm on my 2nd one already and plan to do more! You really don't need to look any further if you're looking to make a scarf - you will not be disappointed. In fact, you'll have fun making it (I did!) Happy crocheting!
Thank you for writing a pattern that is amazingly easy to follow and help me produce a stunning piece!!

Super-duper easy to make and you can be as creative as you like by choosing colours, placement of colours to form pattern(s), number of leaves, etc. so it truly can be personalized for any occasion! Love the Secret Yarnery patterns and tutorials - thank you so much for your time, efforts, and for sharing your talent with the rest of us in the world!
The best pattern & tutorial I have ever come across. Loved how you used the needle to clearly point out where the stitch was to go. Have made 3 hats already. Many more on my to do list. Thanks so much
The yarn world is vast & has several yarn naming & grading systems. This chart really helps to get the right weight of yarn, size of needle, gauge & yardage/meterage when using patterns or yarns from other countries. And it covers both knit & crochet. Thank you for putting together this very useful tool, Secret Yarnery.
I love this pattern. Very easy to follow and fun to make.
