Crochet Podcast Episode 157: Finished Projects, Works in Progress & Life Updates

Welcome back to The Secret Yarnery! It’s always such a joy to connect with fellow crochet enthusiasts. If you’re new here, my name is Christa, and I’m passionate about all things crochet! From works in progress to finished objects, creative tips to little glimpses into life, this space is for anyone who loves crochet. Today, I’m diving into what I’ve been up to recently—grab a cup of tea or your crochet hook, and let’s jump in!

Family Fun & Easter Joy

Easter was absolutely delightful this year! It was a full-on family affair, and the festivities brought out some creative problem-solving. Rather than a classic candy hunt where kids scramble and compete, I created personalized scavenger hunts for each child. Using some desktop publishing software, I divided candy piles equally and gave everyone the chance to search for their own stash. It was a hit—and a fair one at that!

For our Easter feast, I served up a mouthwatering roast ham with mashed potatoes, gravy, and seasonal vegetables, capped off with a lemon meringue pie. My tip? Make extra lemon filling to ensure a pie that’s bursting with flavor. The thicker filling was a crowd-pleaser, and yes, it even doubled as breakfast the next day!

One of my culinary highlights was Hasselback potatoes. If you’ve never tried this, you slice potatoes thinly, but not all the way through. I used BBQ skewers to prevent over-slicing, which made the process a breeze. These potatoes added a perfect crunchy-yet-soft texture to our meal.

The kids have April off from school, so we’ve been enjoying long walks, cozy home activities, and just soaking in some quality family time. Having everyone home is such a treat!

Social Media Growth: Conquering Instagram

Social media has been a love-hate journey for me. While I’m perfectly comfortable with YouTube, Instagram has always felt like a tricky puzzle I couldn’t quite solve. This year, I made it my mission to figure it out.

After some trial and error, I found my groove with a simple but fun strategy: start with my feet! Whether I’m in pajamas or outdoor shoes, I snap a quick photo of where I am, beginning with my feet, and use that as a springboard to share my environment. This method feels natural, less intrusive, and more manageable for me.

Finished Objects: What I’ve Been Crocheting

Easter Basket Bonanza

This year, I crocheted sturdy, practical Easter baskets for each of the kids. These aren’t just your average baskets either—they’re strong, functional, and oh-so-cute. Using an 8mm crochet hook and four strands of yarn, I created durable baskets with built-in handles to avoid unnecessary stitching. The base turned out nice and flat, giving these baskets a delightful, polished look.

For decoration, I experimented with different embellishments for the handles, including bows, ribbons, and flowers. Ultimately, I landed on crocheted flowers, which added a charming touch while keeping things consistent and accessible for those following my tutorials.

Interestingly, these baskets are multi-purpose! Aside from holding Easter treats, I’ve been using mine to store yarn balls. They keep everything neat, stable, and within reach. If you’d like to make your own, check out our Easy Crochet Easter Baskets pattern for a fun project.

Mini Baskets

Scaling down the Easter basket pattern, I made a smaller version using two strands of yarn and a 4.5mm hook. These dainty baskets turned out perfect for storing little items like cotton balls, toiletries, or tiny craft supplies. They’re a great option if you’re short on time but still want something practical and adorable!

Crochet Easter Eggs: A Subscriber-Inspired Project

Thanks to a lovely comment suggesting pastel garlands for Easter, I went on a bit of an egg-making spree. These crochet eggs are quick (just 6-7 minutes each!), fun, and fantastic for Easter decor or play kitchens. Using a magic ring ensures that the ends are closed, giving the eggs a neat, polished appearance.

I made enough eggs to fill an entire egg crate—and trust me, they’re adorable! Whether you favor classic white or prefer brightly colored eggs for a festive touch, this is a project that’s as versatile as it is simple. Play kitchens, table decor, or just playful counting activities—crochet eggs fit them all perfectly.

Big Basket for Blanket Storage

Next on my list of finished objects is a massive floor basket for blanket storage. Crafted with three strands of a neutral Kenyan acrylic yarn, this basket blends seamlessly with my home decor. Its size makes it a perfect addition to the living room, able to hold multiple throw blankets while adding a touch of handmade charm.

This type of basket isn’t just for blankets—it’s practical for toys, seasonal decor, or any items you want to tuck away neatly. If baskets are your thing, check out patterns for similar projects under Bags & Baskets.

Works in Progress (WIPs)

Spring Lace Blanket

I dusted off a lace blanket project I started a few years ago and am thrilled to bring it back to life. Made with a one-row repeat, this pattern is as straightforward as it gets, making it ideal for crocheting while chatting or binge-watching your favorite shows.

The tutorial for this beautiful blanket is coming soon. Meanwhile, if you want to brush up on similar easy crochet patterns, check out our beginner-friendly options.

Spring Wrap

Using Ice Yarn’s Cakes Cotton Royale, I’m working on a lightweight, textured wrap. Soft, squishy, and incredibly luxurious, this wrap feels almost like knitting. I added extra stitches to ensure the perfect length, aiming for a stylish yet functional accessory.

If you don’t have Cakes Cotton Royale, any DK-weight yarn will work beautifully for this wrap. For more details on beginner-friendly wraps and other crochet patterns, visit the Written Patterns collection.

Crochet, Content & Community

Looking ahead, I’ve decided to streamline my content schedule. There’ll be a proper video every Sunday, with additional content on Wednesdays whenever possible. For sneak peeks and short-form content, keep an eye out for Instagram reels and YouTube shorts.

While crocheting Easter baskets, I stumbled upon “Coma” on Netflix, and it was surprisingly watchable! If you’ve got a series or movie recommendation, share it in the comments—I’m always looking for something to crochet along to.
