Easy Crochet Scarf Pattern: The Coronation Scarf

I'm Krista from The Secret Yarnery, and today I'm excited to walk you through creating the Coronation Scarf step by step. This gorgeous crochet scarf may look complicated, but trust me, it's beginner-friendly, using only a few simple stitches—double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitches.

The best part? It's an easy two-row repeat pattern that is both relaxing and fun once you get the hang of it. I’ll even share some handy memory tricks to help you keep track of your stitches as you go. Ready to get started? Here’s everything you need to make your very own Coronation Scarf!

Materials Needed

Before you begin, make sure you have the following materials ready:

  • Yarn: I used Saver from Icy Yarns in a Denim Jeans color.
  • Crochet Hook:
    • A 7mm hook gives you a beautifully squishy scarf. If you don’t have a 7mm hook, grab one here.
    • Alternatively, you can go with a standard 6mm hook if that's what you have on hand.
  • Darning Needle: For sewing in those loose ends.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair to snip your yarn ends.

Want to follow along with a written pattern? You can find the Coronation Scarf written pattern on my website, where you'll also see all the necessary measurements and yarn requirements.

Optional Addition

Starting the Scarf

First things first—grab your yarn and make a slipknot. You can do this however you're most comfortable.

Next, decide on the width of your scarf. The great thing about this pattern is that you can customize it easily by chaining in multiples of three. For my scarf, I chained 21. If you want it to be wider or narrower, just adjust your chain count.

Pro Tip: Keeping Your Edges Neat

When working your base chain, I like to insert my hook into the back loops of the chain. This creates a much nicer and tidier edge for the bottom of the scarf. It's a small detail that makes a big difference in the final look.

  1. Grab your hook and yarn.
  2. Chain 21 (or any multiple of 3 for your desired width).
  3. Still keeping it neat? Great! Let’s move on to the base row.

Creating the Base Row

For the first row, we’ll work a simple combination of single crochet and chains. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Single crochet: Start by working a single crochet into the second chain from the hook.
  2. Chain 1, then skip the next chain.
  3. Into the following chain, work one single crochet, chain 2, and then another single crochet—all in the same chain.
  4. Repeat across the row: chain 2, skip two chains, and make a cluster of one single crochet, chain 2, and another single crochet into the next chain.

By the end of your row, your chain should have several neat little "bumps." This is the foundation for the rest of your scarf.

Row Tip: Visualizing the Pattern

Imagine you're creating little bumps along the entire row. Each bump is a spaced-out stitch that will set the stage for the Crown and Head rows coming up.

The Two-Row Repeat: Head and Crown Rows

Once your base row is complete, it’s time to dive into the two-row repeat that defines this scarf pattern. Don’t be intimidated! It's quite simple after a few repetitions.

Row 2: The Head Row (Double Crochets)

  1. Start with a Chain-3: At the beginning of Row 2, chain 3, then turn your work.
  2. Double crochet: Now, you’ll place 3 double crochets into each chain-2 space (the little gaps between your bumps from Row 1).
  3. End with a Double Crochet: To keep your edges straight, don’t forget to work one final double crochet into the last stitch of the row (which should be the top of the last single crochet from the previous row).

This row marks the pattern’s heads, which we will crown in the next row.

Row 3: The Crown Row (Single Crochets and Chains)

Now that you’ve created the heads in Row 2, it’s time to crown them!

  1. Chain 1, turn your work.
  2. Insert your hook into the first stitch and make one single crochet, then chain 1.
  3. Crown each head: As you move along, ignore the first and last stitches in each group of three. Instead, focus on the middle stitch—the center of each “head." Into that center stitch, work:
    • One single crochet,
    • Chain 2,
    • Another single crochet.
  4. Chain 2, and repeat for each center stitch across the row.

You’ve now decorated each head with a crown!

Repeating the Pattern

From here, it’s all about alternating rows until your scarf reaches your desired length:

  • Heads on one row, crowns on the next.
  • Remember to always start the "Head rows" with a chain 3 and the "Crown rows" with a chain 1.

Keeping It Steady: Tips for Remembering the Crown Row Sequence

I get it—it’s easy to forget where you are in the pattern, especially during the crown row. Here’s a trick I use to keep things consistent. It’s like a mantra:

  • "Chain 2, Crown, Chain 2, Jump."
    • After every crown, tell yourself "Chain 2" to mark when you're finished with that crown.
    • Then "Jump" to the next gap to repeat.

This mantra ensures I don’t accidentally skip a crown!

Left Handed?

Fixing Common Mistakes

We all mess up sometimes, and it happens to the best of us. Maybe you’ll forget to crown a head somewhere along the way. Here’s what you can do:

Option 1: Frog It

This means pulling out the stitches until you reach the mistake. Go back to the missed step, crown that head, and carry on.

Option 2: The Cheat Fix

If frogging sounds too frustrating (believe me, I get it!), you can "cheat" by inserting your double crochets directly into the stitch below the missing crown. Just make sure it looks tidy from the front. It’s barely noticeable to anyone else, and it helps you keep your momentum going.

Finishing Your Scarf

Once your scarf is as long as you'd like, it's time to wrap it up, literally!

Completing the Last Row

  1. Finish your scarf on a Head row (that way, it’s nice and sturdy).
  2. End with a simple edge: After your last Head row, chain 1, and turn your work.
  3. Single crochet across the row, inserting your hook into the usual spaces but without making any more crowns or heads. Just move smoothly across.
  4. Snip your yarn, leaving a bit of a tail, and weave that in later with your darning needle.
