I'm Krista from The Secret Yarnery, and today I'm excited to walk you through creating the Coronation Scarf step by step. This gorgeous crochet scarf may look complicated, but trust me, it's beginner-friendly, using only a few simple stitches—double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitches.
The best part? It's an easy two-row repeat pattern that is both relaxing and fun once you get the hang of it. I’ll even share some handy memory tricks to help you keep track of your stitches as you go. Ready to get started? Here’s everything you need to make your very own Coronation Scarf!
Before you begin, make sure you have the following materials ready:
Want to follow along with a written pattern? You can find the Coronation Scarf written pattern on my website, where you'll also see all the necessary measurements and yarn requirements.
First things first—grab your yarn and make a slipknot. You can do this however you're most comfortable.
Next, decide on the width of your scarf. The great thing about this pattern is that you can customize it easily by chaining in multiples of three. For my scarf, I chained 21. If you want it to be wider or narrower, just adjust your chain count.
When working your base chain, I like to insert my hook into the back loops of the chain. This creates a much nicer and tidier edge for the bottom of the scarf. It's a small detail that makes a big difference in the final look.
For the first row, we’ll work a simple combination of single crochet and chains. Here’s how to do it:
By the end of your row, your chain should have several neat little "bumps." This is the foundation for the rest of your scarf.
Imagine you're creating little bumps along the entire row. Each bump is a spaced-out stitch that will set the stage for the Crown and Head rows coming up.
Once your base row is complete, it’s time to dive into the two-row repeat that defines this scarf pattern. Don’t be intimidated! It's quite simple after a few repetitions.
This row marks the pattern’s heads, which we will crown in the next row.
Now that you’ve created the heads in Row 2, it’s time to crown them!
You’ve now decorated each head with a crown!
From here, it’s all about alternating rows until your scarf reaches your desired length:
I get it—it’s easy to forget where you are in the pattern, especially during the crown row. Here’s a trick I use to keep things consistent. It’s like a mantra:
This mantra ensures I don’t accidentally skip a crown!
Left Handed?
We all mess up sometimes, and it happens to the best of us. Maybe you’ll forget to crown a head somewhere along the way. Here’s what you can do:
This means pulling out the stitches until you reach the mistake. Go back to the missed step, crown that head, and carry on.
If frogging sounds too frustrating (believe me, I get it!), you can "cheat" by inserting your double crochets directly into the stitch below the missing crown. Just make sure it looks tidy from the front. It’s barely noticeable to anyone else, and it helps you keep your momentum going.
Once your scarf is as long as you'd like, it's time to wrap it up, literally!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this free crochet scarf tutorial. The Coronation Scarf is one of my favorite projects that looks way more intricate than it actually is. This is what makes crochet so fun—you can create stunning pieces with just a few basic stitches and a little bit of patience.

The Coronation Scarf is beginner-friendly. It uses simple stitches like double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitches, making it perfect for those new to crocheting or looking for a relaxing project.
The pattern recommends using Saver from Icy Yarns, specifically in a Denim Jeans color. However, you can substitute with any medium-weight yarn you like.
Yes, while a 7mm hook is suggested for a squishy texture, a 6mm hook can also be used if that's what you have available. Just ensure to check your gauge to maintain the pattern's integrity.
The pattern is flexible, allowing you to customize the width by chaining in multiples of three. For a narrower or wider scarf, simply increase or decrease your chain count accordingly.
Mistakes happen! You can either "frog" your work, which means pulling out stitches until you correct the error, or use a "cheat fix" by inserting your double crochets underneath where the mistake was made.
When working your base chain, insert your hook into the back loops of the chain. This technique helps create a clean, tidy edge for the bottom of the scarf.

The of the easiest way to make a beautiful baby blanket! So fun to make.
This works up so beautifully!! The pattern is easy to read; the placemat is gorgeous, and the YouTube video is great. Thank you!!
The scarf looks lovely but I cannot give a review as i have not made it yet and I cannot comment whether the pattern is easy to read pattern.
I love the pattern I haven’t started it yet I’m excited about getting started on it
I love all secret tragedies patterns. Can't wait to start one. Thank you Christa.
Connie.
I love how this spiral pattern worked up. Ready to just keep going and only watching my stitch marker move up with me. I am going to try this pattern with different yarns for light to heavy hats.
Easy pattern to follow and understand. Great scarf for spring, Summer and Fall. If you use cotton yarn, you can wear it with everything everyday! Thanks Secret Yarnery! Eileen
In fact very easy to do
I bit the bullet (a quilter of 20 years), admitted that crochet also takes experience to succeed. So, I tried "The Secret Yarnery" pattern for Granny Square beginners. It was stress free, fun and I learned a lot about tension. And I now have a beautiful baby afghan for my new granddaughter. Thank you to the Secret Yarnery!
Everything I need in one place to be creative and I can photocopy extras of the pages I use most to customise my planning. I use it as my main diary, even for work and upcoming events. It inspires me to focus on my creative pursuits too. Love it!
Love this item going to put little gifts in it on the tree ,just tying in tails.
I am really impressed with the quality of this written pattern as well as the video tutorial. Both are clear and detailed. I am not done with my striped cardigan yet, but it's coming together nicely (though I'm not so sure about my choice to use up yarn I already have with individual stripes!)... so many tails to sew in!! My advice would be to buy self-striping yarn like she does in the video.
Easy to follow pattern! Super base for the rectangle or other larger projects.
Keep the tutorials coming and with written and visual instructions to follow along so beginners can learn. Thank you for your help.
